Email

In early to mid 2008 several different emails were being forwarded through the Internet claiming that Barack Obama was potentially the anti-Christ. Granted every person from Martin Luther, every single Pope, and so on has been called the anti-Christ but could this be the one? Finally could Christian prayers for the end of the world be answered? Well, let's take a closer look.

The emails were edited in all kinds of different ways but there are two primary version where the others seem to originate. I will discuss each one.

Note: I kept the grammar, spelling, and punctuation intact. Also for the sake of keeping up with the crazies, I reference the King James Version of the Bible primarily.

A Trivia question in Sunday School:

Great, time to drag children into this garbage.

How long is the beast allowed to have authority in Revelations? Guess the Answer? Revelations Chapter 13 tells us it is 42 months, and you know what that is.

First of all, the Beast is not the anti-Christ. While a lot of Evangelicals say so, if we are to take the Bible literally, then the Beast is a creature which comes from the ocean. He has "seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns"[1] and he was a mix of "a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion"[2] It sounds like something out of a fairy tale, but hardly like a black man.

Moving on beyond that though, what about the power thing? Well Revelation Chapter 13 says the following about the Beast: "And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months."[3] It seems to me like the author is saying the Beast will continue to blaspheme for 42 months.

Almost a four-year term to a Presidency. All I can say is Lord Have Mercy on us.!!!!!!

Ignoring all of that I said above and assuming my interpretation is completely incorrect: there are 48 months in 4 years, so does this mean Obama won't serve a full presidency? Sounds like the anti-Christ would be slacking off a bit.

According to The Book of Revelations the anti-Christ is: The anti-Christ will be a man, in his 40's,

The anti-Christ is never mentioned in the Book of Revelation, this conclusion is reached by individuals who say the described monster in Revelation is indeed the anti-Christ[4]. Revelation never says or suggests the age of the Beast - as far as I could find.

of MUSLIM descent,

If we ignore the simple fact Islam or Muslims are never mentioned in the Bible, anywhere, it's worth noting that in reality the Book of Revelation was written sometime in 68 or 69AD or later in 95 or 96AD[5]. This matters because Islam wasn't founded until sometime during 610AD when Muhammad began receiving transmissions from God[6].

Aside from the fact Islam is a religion and not an ethnicity, Revelation implies (according to believers) that the Beast (or anti-Christ as they believe) will be in fact a Christian[7]. Though you can find some people who say he will be a Jewish person - probably from the same tribe as Jesus.

who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal....

These exact same arguments were used against...every popular politician for the last 2,000 years almost.

the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace,

Same here, even when they didn't promise peace this was still applied to them.

and when he is in power, will destroy everything ..

Interestingly the Bible doesn't say anything about the anti-Christ destroying health care. But it does talk a lot about sharing, caring, and doing good by your neighbor - I guess maybe that's been lost in translation[8].

Is it OBAMA?? I STRONGLY URGE each one of you to repost this as many times as you can! Each opportunity that you have to send it to a friend or media outlet...do it! I refuse to take a chance on this unknown candidate who came out of nowhere.

IS IT?? NO.!!!! I strongly urge people not to buy into this garbage and to stop forwarding emails unless they're actually important. Lastly, enough of this "came out of no where stuff": I actually have an article on that.

Obama is the Anti-Christ. This is the evidence:

1.- He will come as a man of Peace (Obama promises peace in Iraq, defeat for the US)

I guess the peace that Jesus preached was war in Iraq and a long, drawn out occupation for the US.

I found an interesting quote in this popular book:

"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."[9].

I guess those red words refer to some other Jesus.

2.- He will come mounted on a white Female horse(Obama mother is white who had 6 African husbands)

At first I was at a loss on this one, but it didn't take but a second to figure out that to the author "horse = whore".

Is this idiot actually suggesting horse and whore are related? Granted, they probably believe the King James Version was sent down from heaven, but even so there's absolutely no linguistic similarly in any of the languages of the bible, and not even in English[10][11].

Obama's mother was only married twice, and to one African[12][13].

The passage in question actually refers to one of the Four Horsemen (War in this case), and the gender of the horse is never specified[14].

3.- He will come to deceive( Obama says he's a Christian but in fact he was born a Muslim, practices the Islamic religion, prays Friday's facing Mecca)

I can't think of a single politician that doesn't deceive. I have a whole section dedicated to the claim that Obama is/was a Muslim, and it's not true. Ignoring that fact, this person clearly knows nothing about Islam because Muslims (well, the ones that actually do pray often) pray five times daily towards Mecca[15].

4.- He will make himself the most powerful man on earth, if elected

Not according to Alex Jones or other conspiracy theorists.

5.- He will try to destroy the Jewish People and Israel( Obama has said he loves the Arabs specially the Palestinians, hates Israel and Jews. Admires Hitler, Osama etc)

He's never said this; if he had you surely would have heard about it some place other than in a stupid email. Obama has never said he hated Israel, and in fact said that the relationship between the US and Israel was a close and undeniable[16][17]. This also ignores the fact that he doesn't have anyone in his administration that is against Israel.

The idea that he admires Hitler and Osama is also completely unfounded and the Hitler one is especially stupid.

It reminds me of this church sign I saw that said, "We don't care if Obama says he's not a Muslim, he still is one".

6.- He will present himself as good and righteous but in fact he's Satan himself. Violence is in his heart

Again, this fits many politicians.

7.- Obama will help Al Qaida in its evil projects.

Just its evil projects?

8.- Barack Hussein Obama is the "King of the South" predicted in the Bible.(Daniel .11, Kenya is south of Jerusalem)

Ignoring the major factual error that Daniel 11:5 refers to king from the south of Persia[18], Kenya is "south of Jerusalem" in the same way that Arizona is south of Virginia.

9.- Obama comes to implant muslim Sharia Law upon America.

I guarantee, based on the scholarly workmanship above, the author has absolutely no clue what Sharia Law is.

Obama is the Anti-Christ, beware of him.

Shouldn't Christians be happy that the anti-Christ is here? Because in seven short years that means Jesus is going to come and rescue them. Even so, what about those people who believe in the rapture where they'll disappear and be whisked away to heaven (that's not in the bible by the way) before the anti-Christ takes over? Either I'm to assume they're completely wrong, or every single one of them lives so sinfully that not a single one disappeared before Obama was elected.

Video

A video of moderate popularity on video hosting sites like YouTube states that Obama could be the anti-Christ based on evidence provided therein. The video is located here.

I've laid out each claim made by the film and discussed it below.

Did Jesus really reveal the name of the anti-Christ? I report, you decide.

Whenever someone says  "I report, you decide", I always take it to mean "I report, you take with a massive grain of salt."

In Luke chapter 10 verse 18 we read these words of Jesus, "and he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."

I'll get back to this in a second.

These words are written in Greek and translated to English, however Jesus probably spoke these words in Aramaic.

Jesus almost certainly spoke Aramaic as it was spoken in Galilee at that time[19].

Two words in this text are of particular interest. The words are "lightning" and "heaven". Jesus said "I saw Satan falling as lightning from heaven."

He didn't say that, he said "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven", as in he literally saw Satan. He directly misquoted something he just said and changed the context.

In Greek the word for lightning is "astrape". It has a direct Hebrew equivalent. From Strong's Hebrew Dictionary, words 1299 and 1300 from the Hebrew language, the word for lightning is "baraq".

I'm not sure why he even has to say what the Greek word is, but it is indeed astrape[21]. The narrator states previously that Jesus "probably spoke these words in Aramaic", but here he's looking up the Hebrew word. The Aramaic doesn't seem that much different, but it's either "ba'rqaa" or "ba'rqoa" depending on whether Jesus spoke the eastern or western dialect. And in fact this translation corresponds with the Aramaic translation of Luke 10:18[22].

In the Greek text of Luke chapter 10, the word translated as "heaven" is "ouranos". It can mean the heaven of God, but it also carries with it the connotation the "heights" or a "high place" or the domain for Satan himself.

The Greek version of the text states:

εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς, Ἐθεώρουν τὸν Σατανᾶν ὡς ἀστραπὴν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ πεσόντα.

 Which means

(He) said to them: I saw Satan like lighting falls from the sky[20]

Ouranos can indeed refer to both the sky or the place where God dwells, but more often than not in the Bible it does indeed refer to the sky, and sometimes to the broader observable universe[23]. Since Jesus is making an analogy to explain how he literally saw Satan himself, it almost certainly refers to the sky.

Ouranos never refers to the domain of Satan - why would Satan, who according to Christian theology, is in Hell also have his domain in the sky where God's domain is also supposed to exist?

Evidence of this is found in the same book of Luke, in chapter 8 verse 5, when Jesus speaks of the gospel being attacked demonically he uses these words: "... and the birds of the air devoured it."

Here the most accepted context by biblical scholars is that the "birds" are the demonic realm and the "air" is realm of Satan - from on high, or the heights. The Greek word here used for air is ouranos - evidence that this Greek word is not always used in the sense of the heaven of God. But it can be used for the "heights" or "the high places", or the domain of Satan himself.

If biblical scholars really view birds as the "demonic realm" and "air" as the realm of Satan, I really have to question whether or not they've actually read it:

"A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it"[24].

This verse is a part of a parable Jesus is telling, basically involving a farmer who has a lot of problems growing his crops. In Luke 8:10 his followers even ask him what he means by this, and in response Jesus says:

"The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, "'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand."[25]

On the one hand Christians tell us to take the Bible literally, but on the other they just make up whatever they want and ignore context all together.

In Luke chapter 10 verse 18 this is the exact context of Jesus' words: "I saw Satan falling like lightning from the heights, or the high places, or from Satan's domain on high, or from the heavens, or heaven."

Except, not really. Jesus was referring to the sky, not the abode of God.

If Jesus' word translated in the English text as "heaven" was referring to the heaven of God, the Hebrew word would be Shamayim.

Didn't he just say that ouranos can also be used to refer to the heaven of God? Now he's claiming that instead ouranos wouldn't be used, instead Shamayim would. While Shamayim is the accurate Hebrew word in translation, again we both agree that Jesus spoke Aramaic - similarly the Aramaic word isn't that much different as one would guess, it being "shmayaa" or "shmayoa"[26]

More than likely though, according to the context of Luke 10 and Luke 8, Jesus was not referring the Shamayim of God, but rather the domain of Satan.

In both cases Jesus is referring to the sky - where birds and airplanes fly, and factories pollute.

Now consider this amazing fact, the book of Isaiah is the source of origin for the Christian concept of Satan, or Lucifer; in Isaiah chapter 14 verses 12 through 19 especially.

In Isaiah chapter 14 verse 14, we hear these words, spoken by Satan himself:

"I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High"

Christians often cite Isaiah 14:12 as the introduction of Satan into Christian theology. The problem with this assessment is that based on the original context, prior to translation, the entire chapter of Isaiah 14 is really a tale about the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar. This is the same king who conquered Judah and Jerusalem, thus earning the ire of the Hebrews at that time. Furthermore, the specific verse of Isaiah 14:12 recalls that the king wanted God and others to acknowledge his power and that he wanted to see himself placed as such - in the philosophical heavens with God. As a result of this, God punishes him[27]. Over the centuries this tale went from a simple misinterpretation to a great battle between God, Satan, and other rebellious Angels, and Satan being cast down to the center of Earth in Hell, and so on.

This matches the exact context of Jesus' words in Luke chapter 10.

Actually it doesn't, because the context Jesus was using was the literal sky, and here it refers to the abode of God.

In the verses of Isaiah that refer directly to Lucifer, several times it is mentioned that Satan has fallen from the heights or from the heavens.

The Hebrew word used in this text for the heights from which Satan fell is Hebrew word number 1116 in the Strong's Hebrew Dictionary, and it is pronounced "bamah"

"Bamah" is most commonly used to refer to a high sacred place as well as to the heights of the heavens, or clouds.

The problem is, other than the fact Jesus wasn't speaking Hebrew at the time as we've already discussed twice, that the quoted verses above never use the word "bamah". When referring to the sky, heights, etc they all use the word "bashmay"[28]

So in Jesus' prophecy of Luke chapter 10 verse 18, if spoken by a Jewish Rabbi in Hebrew, influenced by the poetry of Isaiah, he would use in one form or another, depending on the exact wording and context, the words that come from the root forms of these two hebrew words "baraq" and "bamah" to describe Satan falling like lightning from on high.

Yes, but Jesus was a Rabbi that spoke Aramaic. It doesn't matter what any peotry said, the fact is if the quotes are literal, he never said "bamah".

Hebrew for lighting is baraq, and Hebrew for the heights or the high places is bamah, this fact is indisputable.

Aramaic for lightning is ba'rqaa, and the Aramaic for "the heights" is bashmay.

So was Jesus actually giving us a clue as to who the future anti-christ might be? Many believe so. It is possible that it is merely a strange coincdence, yet it cannot be denied. If hebrew words were used to describe Jesus' statement about Satan falling or coming to earth, perhaps as a man in the form of the anti-Christ, the hebrew words baraq and bamah would be used.

Not really, unless Barack Obama's name is actually Ba'rqaa Bashmay.

In the original version of the film he talked about the conjunction "waw" which according to him, is written U or O by some scholars. So of course this means "Baraq "O" Bamah"

The problem here is that "vav" is "and" not "from" or "of", so this would only make sense if Jesus said "lighting fall and heaven".

Regardless of this all, if my interpretation of these verses is 100% incorrect, the translations aren't. There's absolutely no way Jesus was referring to Barack Obama, no matter how many random Greek words and unrelated verses one inserts.

What does it mean then?

Barack originates from the Arabic word for "blessèd" and is related to the Hebrew "Baruch", having the same meaning. His last name I couldn't find a direct meaning for, but it's likely from the Dhoulou language, and it's an extremely common surname in his father's tribe[29].
