Read Nietzsche and Kirkegaard. It is a really complicated doctrine despite its superficial simplicity. I suggest "The Gay Science" or "Thus Spoke Zarathustra"

Nihilism seems like one of those really obscure corners of philosophy that makes me want to throw up my hands and say "what does it matter!?!?!?!"

I dont think any of us are particularly qualified for that. You're branching into a realm of philosophy that is still not totally understood. And talking about it wont necessarily clarify it. After all, its not as easy as "nothing matters" or "existence has no meaning."

Seems like a way for people to be an arsehole but not feel bad about it.

And I minored in philosophy so I have some level of tolerance for it.

Omin, its not a philosophical position in a proper sense. It rejects objective a priori positions but this is really not a well developed philosophical position. Its the foundation of some modes of moral relativity but it also faces some qualifications and challenges from more empirical groundings. Its a cop out philosophy, in my opinion.

Nihilism leads to syphilis and mental issues, not necessarily in that order so do not read Nietzche. Penthouse only gets you one of those things.

As someone told me recently on a forum I frequent:

Just trying to state that if we start from this obvious fact, that we all comprehend as normal and trivial, but actually is demented and utterly absurd, we can't be certain in anything no more!!! Like I said, we live in a sick and corrupt world and everything, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING is possible...

Took a lot at that and I want to address the gubbermint telling us stuff.

No, the government doesn't tell us everything, never has, never will. That doesn't mean something sinister is going on. When we know the inner machinations and every single detail, we get bored out of our skulls. Or, when we find something nice and juicy, people get pissed off, riot, and then people get hurt and killed. But I guess 'knowing everything for freedom and liberty' or whatever is more important than human life.

Complete transparency has never, ever been a part of the American political process. In fact, the founders kept their debates secret from the people at the time deliberately.

There's no point discussing nihilism, we're all just a bunch of highly evolved apes living on a rock flying through endless space, and the rock itself is dieing.

Enjoy your day folks.

Apes are a different species and there have been many instances of catastrophic climate change recorded in the geologic record.
